February is National Children Dental Health Month, so we want to share with our followers some gum disease prevention tips.</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-left: 15px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Establish good dental hygiene habits </strong>early. When your child is 12 months old, you can begin using toothpaste when brushing his or her teeth. When the gaps between your child's teeth close, it's important to start flossing.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-left: 15px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Serve as a good role model </strong>by practicing good dental hygiene habits yourself.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-left: 15px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Schedule regular dental visits </strong>for family checkups, periodontal evaluations and cleanings.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-left: 15px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Check your child's mouth </strong>for the signs of periodontal disease, including bleeding gums, swollen and bright red gums, gums that are receding away from the teeth and bad breath</li>
</ul>

<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">What are All-on-4 dental implants?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />For those patients that have lost all their teeth or have teeth that cannot be restored, the all-on-4 dental implant restoration is the best way to restore your dental health to as closely as possible in looks and function to your original teeth. The restoration is attached to 4 dental implants placed in the bone to support the restoration.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
All-on-4 dental implants:</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 0px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Are permanent teeth that can be brushed and cleaned like natural teeth</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Do not have to be taken out </li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Do not need adhesives</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Are comfortable because they do not press down on your gums</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Allow you to experience the hot and cold of your food, as well as the taste</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Allow you to bite with increased force (up to 70% more), so you can eat all of your favorite foods again</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Prevent bone deterioration </li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Restore your facial features<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">How are All-on-4 Dental Implants different from dentures?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />All-on-4 dental implants differ from dentures because they are a permanent solution for missing or severely damaged teeth. They are secured directly into your own jaw, so they look, feel and function just like natural teeth.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">How do All-on-4 dental implants compare to traditional implants?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The All-on-4 dental implant technique uses only four implants per arch, whereas traditional implants utilize anywhere from six to eight implants or more in each arch. The implants of the All-on-4 procedure are also placed at an angle, which allows for increased contact by using the natural support of your bone. In addition, the All-on-4 procedure requires no bone grafting for most patients, which is common in traditional implant procedures. Therefore, All-on-4 dental implants save both time and money.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">How long is the All-on-4 dental implant surgery?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The surgery takes approximately 2.5 hours per arch.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">What is the success rate with All-on-4 Dental Implants?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Published studies show a 98% success rate using All-on-4 dental implants.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Who is the ideal candidate for All-on-4 Dental Implants?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The ideal candidate for the All-on-4 dental implant procedure at Dental Associates is someone who is missing most or all of their teeth, or is currently wearing dentures. Age is not a limiting factor for All-on-4 dental implants as long the candidate is in good health.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Where will my replacement teeth be made?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />We work closely with a lab that has done thousands of implant restorations. The lab technician will be a part of the pre-surgical preparation and be at the office the day of the surgery to make sure we get the best possible restoration. The restoring dentist will also be present along with the oral surgeon to place the restoration following the implant surgical placement.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Will my results look natural?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Absolutely. The All-on-4 dental implant technique gives you permanent teeth that look, feel and function just like real teeth. No one will know you have implants unless you tell them.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Why don't I get my permanent set of teeth the day my implants are placed?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />As with any surgery, you need time to heal. However, you will not leave our office without teeth! A temporary set of teeth will be placed on your implants. Once the healing process is complete, your permanent teeth will be placed at a follow up visit approximately six months after surgery.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">What if I just need implants on my bottom arch? What if I someday need All-on-4 dental implants on both arches?</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />All-on-4 implants can be placed on just the upper or lower arch. Our implant specialists will evaluate your circumstance and if we feel you might eventually need replacement teeth on both the upper and lower arches, we might suggest performing the procedure on both arches at the same time. This provides better results while also saving time and money. Your doctor will work with you to determine what best meets your health needs and financial situation.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">What type of cleaning is required after an implant is placed? </strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Since dental implants should be treated like your natural teeth, daily brushing and flossing is recommended. Our team of specialists and dental hygienists will review oral hygiene instructions with you and recommend the most appropriate daily oral hygiene plan to fit your needs.</div>

<h4 class="font_4">
</h4>
<div class="node font_8">
Mouth guards are coverings worn over teeth, and often used to protect teeth from injury from teeth grinding and during sports.</div>
<div class="node font_8">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="node font_7">
<b>There are three types of mouth guards:</b></div>
<div class="node font_8">
<br /></div>
<ol class="font_8">
<li><div class="node font_8">
Stock mouth protectors are preformed
and come ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can be bought at most
sporting good stores and department stores. However, little can be done
to adjust their fit, they are bulky, make breathing and talking
difficult, and they provide little or no protection. Dentists do not
recommend their use.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="node font_8">
Boil and bite mouth protectors also can
be bought at many sporting goods stores and may offer a better fit than
stock mouth protectors. The "boil and bite" mouth guard is made from
thermoplastic material. It is placed in hot water to soften, then placed
in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using finger and tongue
pressure.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="node font_8">
Custom-fitted mouth protectors are
individually designed and made in a dental office or a professional
laboratory based on your dentist's instructions. First, your dentist
will make an impression of your teeth and a mouth guard is then molded
over the model using a special material. Due to the use of the special
material and because of the extra time and work involved, this
custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the other types, but it
provides the most comfort and protection.</div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="node font_8">
<br /></div>
<div class="node font_8">
Generally,
mouth guards cover your upper teeth only, but in some instances (such
as if you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower
jaw), your dentist will make a mouth guard for the lower teeth as well.
Your dentist can suggest the best mouth guard for you. An effective
mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to
clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech.</div>
<div class="font_8">
<br /></div>
<div class="node font_8">
If you<i> grind your teeth at night, a special mouth guard-type of dental appliance </i>-- called a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint -- may be created to prevent tooth damage.</div>
<div class="slideshow_links_rdr contextual_links_fmt font_8">
<br /></div>
<div class="font_8">
<br /></div>
<div class="font_7">
<b>Who Needs a Mouth Guard?</b><br />
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="node font_8">
Mouth
guards should be used by anyone -- both children and adults -- who play
contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey,
basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. However, even those
participating in non-contact sports (for example, gymnastics) and any
recreational activity (for example, skateboarding, mountain biking) that
might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a
protective mouth guard.<br />
Adults and
children who grind their teeth at night should have a nocturnal bite
plate or bite splint made to prevent tooth damage.<br />
</div>
<div class="node font_8">
<div class="font_7">
<b>Why Use a Mouth Guard When Playing Sports?</b><br />
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="node font_8">
Because
accidents can happen during any physical activity, the advantage of
using a mouth guard during sports is that it can help limit the risk of
mouth-related injuries to your lips, tongue, and soft tissues of your
mouth. Mouth guards also help you avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve
damage to a tooth, or even tooth loss.</div>

<b>Whitening and Coffee </b></h3>
<br />
A big question we get asked is "If I whiten my teeth will I have to give up my coffee?" Not a chance! Lets go over some tips and tricks on how to maintain your pearly whites after and during your whitening treatment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k3mwourTluw/WOPY2yAxyLI/AAAAAAAABa8/ZOGni0Kw2m0pLP6QNTW91qONfSWKNGBjgCLcB/s1600/before-and-after-whiteing2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k3mwourTluw/WOPY2yAxyLI/AAAAAAAABa8/ZOGni0Kw2m0pLP6QNTW91qONfSWKNGBjgCLcB/s320/before-and-after-whiteing2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i>
<i>Why does Coffee, tea or other high pigmented drinks stain our teeth?</i><br />
<br />
Our tooth enamel contains microscopic pits and ridges that can hold particles of food and drink. Pigments from dark-colored drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda can become embedded in those cracks and ridges and, if the proper steps are not taken, can cause permanent, yellowing stains on your teeth.<br />
<br />
<b>#1</b> Brush and floss your teeth twice a day.<br />
The healthier and cleaner your teeth are the less chance you have of building stain because there really isn't anything for the stain to stick too.<br />
<br />
<b>#2</b> Rinse with water after you drink.<br />
We don't want you running to the bathroom to brush right after your coffee or soda. This can actually damage your teeth because of the acidic levels your mouth has from your drinks. Just give your mouth a quick rinse with water and that will do the trick.<br />
<br />
<b>#3 </b>Drink your coffee through a straw.<br />
I know it seems kinda weird but trust me, instead of bathing your teeth in that brown colored delicious coffee, just drink it through a straw. This makes it so your teeth aren't being constantly bathed (especially your front teeth that everyone sees) in that high colored pigment. When you drink it through a straw it skips your teeth and goes right into your stomach. (This goes for any colored drink coffee, tea, soda, even wine.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-on8_iLdGazM/WOPc9zEgNxI/AAAAAAAABbY/jCaBvqg8x5IK7rTSXPM32XnD9DBHeUDCQCLcB/s1600/coffee.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-on8_iLdGazM/WOPc9zEgNxI/AAAAAAAABbY/jCaBvqg8x5IK7rTSXPM32XnD9DBHeUDCQCLcB/s1600/coffee.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>#4 </b>Avoid eating or drinking items that could stain your teeth RIGHT after you bleach.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Right after you bleach you want to avoid all those colored drinks just while your teeth are soaking in all that beautiful white color. It doesn't have to be forever just an hour.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We hope this helps you with some of the questions you have been thinking of. These apply to the in office bleaching or as simply as your at home trays. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #2d2d2d; font-family: ColgateReady; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Most People can live with having some anxiety about going to the dentist. For those with dental phobia, however, the thought of a dental visit is terrifying. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G8OwkifEgw0/WOFGF4yDPOI/AAAAAAAABaQ/_Z2lNl2lLMkPWJLfcYZ_ry59QGo2vDkywCLcB/s1600/Dental%2BFear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="105" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G8OwkifEgw0/WOFGF4yDPOI/AAAAAAAABaQ/_Z2lNl2lLMkPWJLfcYZ_ry59QGo2vDkywCLcB/s400/Dental%2BFear.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Don't let this be you, missing the dentist can cause not only pain if you have active decay that doesn't get diagnosed but sometimes a costly amount of money to fix it.<br />
<br />
Depending on the severity of fear and anxiety, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be combined with oral medication which is taken before your treatment to help you relax even further. It is a great choice for people who fear needles. You will be awake and aware of your surroundings but relaxed and free of anxiety. It also helps create short term partial memory loss, so most patients do remember discomfort, smells or noises associated with the dental procedures performed.<br />
<br />
Nitrous oxide is administered through the nose by simple inhalation while your dentist works on your teeth. The amount of gas is regulated by the dentist so he has full control over the amount of anxiety control which is needed for each individual patient.</div>
<div>
<br />
Fear of needles?<br />
<br />
Inhalation sedation is very safe and there is almost no side effect of it. The effects of the laughing gas wear off quickly as so that you can drive yourself home after finishing your procedure without the need of an escort.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
The ADA recommends going to the dentist every 6 months for the proper preventive care. If this is fearful ask your dentist for nitrous oxide during your check up appointments. This will help you prevent future decay and prevent unwanted time in the dental chair. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pgv5ZRAQv4g/WErp-VJA6WI/AAAAAAAABRQ/khh-DtpuoycSDVzP6oyBkRHBem2pzpZDwCLcB/s1600/grinding-teeth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pgv5ZRAQv4g/WErp-VJA6WI/AAAAAAAABRQ/khh-DtpuoycSDVzP6oyBkRHBem2pzpZDwCLcB/s320/grinding-teeth.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<section class="field-body">Feeling stressed can start in your mind, but the effects of it can quickly travel a few inches south to your jaw.<br />
Since we tend to hold tension in our jaw and neck, continual anxiety can cause us to grind our teeth when we sleep. Dentists call this condition bruxism, and it can range from mildly annoying to seriously damaging. It's actually pretty common: 10 to 20 percent of adults deal with it, says Randy N. Downing D.D.S. So how do you know if you’re guilty of grinding? If you find yourself waking up with a dull Headache or an especially tense jaw, bruxism is probably to blame. The most common cause is stress, but bruxism can also be a side effect of a misaligned jaw or even some medications.<br />
The issue with constant grinding is that it can really mess with your tooth enamel, making your teeth more sensitive.<br />
The night grind can also cause or worsen temporomandibular
joint disorder (TMJ), a painful chronic inflammation of the jaw joint
and surrounding muscles. <br />
TMJ is not necessarily a cause of grinding, though.<br />
“People who have chronic TMJ pain are more likely to grind
their teeth,” says Dr.Downing. “However, it’s a chicken and egg
argument. We don’t know if TMJ pain causes one to grind their teeth or
vice versa.”<br />
So how can you avoid the painful effects? Aside from working on reducing your stress, avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they tend to worsen the jaw tension.<br />
You can also have your dentist fit you with a mouth guard to
keep your jaw relaxed and prevent your teeth from grinding at night.<br />
Even though getting one from your dentist might cost you a little more money than the ones you find at the drugstore (they can be up to a few hundred dollars), it’s worth it.<br />
Ill-fitting night guards often don’t cover the back molars,
and since teeth tend to move if something isn’t stopping them, you could
end up with a misaligned bite.<br />

<b>Having a mouth full of dark-colored metal is so commonplace that many people don't know there's an alternative.</b></h2>
<h2>
<b> </b></h2>
<h2>
<b>Metal-free restorations</b></h2>
For years, silver amalgam was the filling material used in dental practices. While amalgams are a perfectly reasonable restoration choice, they can have certain shortcomings. Metal fillings do not bond to the tooth and can actually mask decay in x-rays.<br />
<br />
Teeth with large metal fillings in them can also develop cracks over time due to expansion and contraction of the mercury. Left untreated, thee cracks get larger and can e<span style="background-color: blue;"></span>ventually require root canal treatment. Replacing metal fillings with <span style="color: blue;">tooth-colored composite fillings</span> t<span style="background-color: blue;"></span>hat form a stronger bond to the tooth can dramatically decrease tooth cracking, the chances for <span style="background-color: white;"></span>decay and the need for possible root canal treatment due to a fractured tooth.<br />
<br />
Fillings aren't the only metal-free restorations available today. Dr. Downing also uses crowns made from the latest in modern ceramics as opposed to traditional crowns which are made from porcelain fused to metal. Over time gum tissue can recede which causes the metal inside the crown to become visible at the gum line. These ugly gray lines can make a once beautiful smile lose its luster.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;">Ceramic crowns</span> are incredibly strong and long lasting restorations. and because they are completely bio-compatible there are no allergic reactions or tooth sensitivity problems. They look so natural that even dentists have a hard time spotting them!<br />

If you want the option of modern, state-of-the-art restorations that are natural looking, contain no metals and can actually strengthen your teeth, give us a call today.<br />

If you spit pink every time you brush your teeth, you probably have gum disease. </h2>

Mild gum disease—or gingivitis—is the chronic buildup of
bacteria-laden plaque and tarter on your teeth that only a dentist can

How Gum Disease Gets Worse </h2>
The longer plaque stays there, the more inflammation and
swelling it’ll cause around your gums. The simple act of brushing your
teeth irritates the swollen gums, and makes them bleed. <br />
<br />
The problem: Most guys don’t even know they have gingivitis because it normally doesn’t cause pain until it worsens.<br />
<br />
And you definitely don’t want it to get that point. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, says Murray, Utah dentist Randy N. Downing D.D.S. Your teeth may loosen, or in extreme cases, fall out or need to be removed.<br />
It can also affect more than your mouth: Gum disease is linked to an increased risk of heart disease diabetes, and stroke, too, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.<br />
<h2>
How to Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy </h2>
The only way to get rid of or avoid gingivitis is to
practice good oral hygiene. You should brush twice a day and floss every
night to discourage plaque buildup.<br />

Sounds like simple advice, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to screw up.<br />

Make an appointment with your dentist, too. Guys with
bleeding gums or signs of cavities—toothache, pain when you eat hot or
cold food, or pain when you bite down—should get a cleaning every three
months, says Dr. Downing.<br />
A buildup of plaque—the cause of gum disease—also causes cavities.<br />
If you don’t have any symptoms now, but have had cavities in
the past, you should make an appointment every six months to a year,
Dr. Downing says. <br />

<div class="post-content">
Dental implants are a permanent replacement for lost teeth.
Because of their many advantages over dentures or bridges, many people
are interested in getting implants but have questions about the process,
cost and procedure. Below are the answers to some of the most commonly
asked questions about dental implants.<br />
<br />
<h2>
How long does the implant procedure take?</h2>
<br />
Implants are not something that you can get in just one or two
dentist office visits. There are many steps on the journey towards
implants, and the entire process can take about a year. During this
time, you will always have temporary dentures to wear, so you will never
have to be without teeth. There may be more than one dental
professional involved in your implant process, such as a general dentist
and oral surgeon. The entire implant plan can be laid out for you in
the beginning so that you will know what to expect at every step of the
way. There is always a possibility of changes to the plan along the way,
but your dentists can keep you in the loop so that you will always be
informed of what is happening.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Will dental implants work for me?</h2>
<br />
The first thing most people wonder is if they personally can get
implants, especially if they already wear dentures. The answer is often
yes, but only a dentist can determine if an individual patient is a
candidate for implants. Implants need healthy bone in the jaws, and bone
begins to deteriorate as soon as teeth are lost. The longer you have
been without teeth, the less likely it is that implants will work;
however, there are different types of implants and methods to make
implants possible even for people who have been toothless or worn
dentures for a long time. Also, certain health conditions may increase
the risk that your body will reject implants. It is important for the
dentist to know your health history when determining if you are a
candidate for dental implants.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Are all implants the same?</h2>
<br />
The term “dental implants” actually refers to a variety of different
types of implants and crowns. A single implant can replace one missing
tooth with a titanium post that has an artificial tooth fixed to it.
Full implants that replace all the teeth in the mouth may consist of
several implants that support a row of crowns, while mini-implants may
support removable dentures that are held in place by snapping on to the
implants. Another type of popular dental implant needs only four
implants to support an entire arch of teeth on the top or bottom.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Are implants painful?</h2>
<br />
Part of getting implants involves surgery, so you can expect the
normal discomfort that goes along with any oral surgery. Modern pain
management techniques keep this discomfort to a minimum, and there is no
particular pain associated with actually having dental implants. In
fact, because they are permanent, you won’t have to worry about the pain
that often goes with dentures, such as getting food particles caught
between your dentures and gums or getting sore spots from dentures that
don’t fit correctly.<br />
<br />
<h2>
How much do implants cost?</h2>
<br />
The cost of dental implants is higher than the cost of dentures or
other tooth replacements, but over the years, implants may actually save
you money. Unlike dentures, implants require no special cleaners or
adhesives. A normal toothbrush and the toothpaste you buy for your
family is all that is required. Dentures and bridges need frequent
adjustments and complete replacement every several years, but implants
can last a lifetime. The upfront cost of getting implants depends on a
variety of factors including location of the dentist, the type of
implants you are getting and the work that needs

<b>1. You don’t clean at the right time of day. </b><br />
“Your toothbrush
should be the last thing your teeth touch at night,” says Randy N. Downing, D.D.S. a dentist in Murray, Utah.<br />
Snacking
before you sleep significantly raises your risk for cavities if food
stays lodged in between your teeth.<br />
Your morning method is equally important: Protective saliva

<br />
<b>2. You use the wrong brush.</b><br />
Pick a soft bristle toothbrush
that can slip under your gum tissue and dislodge any plaque stuck there,
Dr. Hewlett recommends. If the plaque isn’t removed, you increase your
risk of developing gum disease.<br />
Brushing with a medium or hard model—and using excessive
pressure—can cause your gums to recede and expose the surface of your
roots, or the bottom of your teeth. Since the root surface isn’t as hard
as the exposed enamel-covered part of your teeth, scrubbing this area
can wear it away more easily and cause little cavities, Dr. Downing
says.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>3. You follow the wrong technique. </b><br />
A few straight strokes won’t get the job done. Position the
handle of your brush so the bristles point at a 30- to 45-degree angle
when they touch your gum tissue, Dr. Downing advises. Rotate your wrist
in a circular motion to effectively remove the plaque, says Dr. Downing.<br />
When you move behind your front teeth, you should turn your
tool vertically to better reach the entire tooth. And make sure to give
special attention to the back of your mouth, since that area normally
hides the largest amount of plaque.<br />

<br />
<br />
<b>4. You don’t rinse.</b><br />
Swallowing or spitting out your toothpaste doesn’t totally
remove all the harmful stuff that you loosened while brushing. Use an
alcohol-free mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide, suggests Chip W. Packer D.M.D. a dentist in Murray, Utah<br />
Our picks: The acid-killing ACT Anticavity Fluoride <i>($5, drugstores)</i> and Colgate Total Advanced Pro-Shield <i>($6, drugstores)</i>. If you don’t have any mouthwash handy, rinsing with water is better than nothing.<br />

<b>5. You ignore the rest of your mouth.</b><br />

as papillae, on the surface of your tongue. <br />

<br />
<b>6. You don’t replace your brush. </b><br />
The ADA recommends buying a new brush every 3 or 4 months.
(The average brush contains more than 10 million bacteria, according to a
British study.) Worn bristles won’t effectively remove plaque or
bacteria.<br />
And if you’ve been sick, swap out your brush immediately.
Residual bacteria and viruses from an illness can cling to the brush and
potentially re-infect you. <br />
<span style="font-family: "timesnewromanps"; font-size: 12pt;"> Sometimes as a patient you may not understand the treatment that is recommended by your dentist. With new modern technology you can now see EXACTLY what Dr. Downing and Dr. Packer sees! Cottonwood Family Dental has invested in an amazing new
technology—the mini intra-oral camera--that actually allows our patients to see what we
see inside the mouth during examination. Dr. Packer says, “It is sometimes difficult
for patients to understand the need for care or home maintenance when they can’t see it
for themselves. Dr. downing says "our patients can see everything we see so they </span><span style="font-family: "timesnewromanps"; font-size: 12pt;">completely understand
our treatment recommendations.” </span><br />

It can be easy to see, even for a patient, when a filling has broken down and needs restoration.<br />
Your dentist can then give you options about the best way to restore a defective filling. I am a dentist, but like everyone else, my teeth need regular care to preserve them and make them as attractive as possible. So, just like everyone else, I go to the dentist to receive many of the procedures I deliver to my own patients.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-guypv_6gLuE/V_PZB5tEbuI/AAAAAAAABIw/3gmNm6SisjAicA_YbdAJIuHPXEH-ld0aACLcB/s1600/gilbert-dentist-general-dentistry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-guypv_6gLuE/V_PZB5tEbuI/AAAAAAAABIw/3gmNm6SisjAicA_YbdAJIuHPXEH-ld0aACLcB/s320/gilbert-dentist-general-dentistry.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I sat down to write goals for my practice, it occurred to me that the kind of dentistry I want to give to my patients was exactly the kind of dentistry I wanted to receive. And I can assure you that I would hold my dentist to some pretty high standards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would want my dentist to see me as an individual, to know me personally and not merely treat me as a chart number or "the next patient." I would want my dentist to foster this relationship by knowing what is important to me and respecting me was a person. And I wouldn't want to be taken for granted, even years into the relationship.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Although I am probably as brave as the next person, I would prefer not to experience discomfort during my dental visit. I would want my dentist to have genuine concern for my comfort before, during and after my treatment. I would want my dentist to have thoroughly mastered pain free dental techniques.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Maybe I am spoiled but I get annoyed if I have to do too much waiting. I would prefer if my dentist and team were ready for me when I arrived and would really like it if I were the only patient there so the doctor and team could give me their full attention.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NHRRUZTuBbo/V_PcqfDaH0I/AAAAAAAABJE/JmEFIvRPqJ4tFI2XwB_lwsDFYM-CuJ47QCLcB/s1600/Unknown.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NHRRUZTuBbo/V_PcqfDaH0I/AAAAAAAABJE/JmEFIvRPqJ4tFI2XwB_lwsDFYM-CuJ47QCLcB/s320/Unknown.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am a stickler for quality. I am even willing to pay a little more if I am receiving top-of-the-line treatment. These teeth are the only ones I will ever have so I wouldn't choose my dentist because his or her fees were the lowest. I would choose a dentist who could provide me with the highest level of care, which is what I feel I deserve. I would appreciate someone who is painstakingly accurate in all the details of my treatment. So what I want as a dental patient is what I hope you want because the result of this kind of treatment is my true goal: optimal dental health and appearance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you want this kind of care, I would be happy to be your dentist.</div>

<br />
<section class="field-body">Even if you follow that standard rule of
thumb—brush your teeth after breakfast and before bed—there’s still time
for cavities to set in.<br />
During that full 12 hours in between brushes, bacteria could mess
with your teeth’s enamel. And that might lead to cavities, root canals,
capped teeth, and maybe even dentures down the road. </section>But
researchers say a simple (and incredibly cheap!) trick could possibly
save you hundreds, or maybe even thousands, in dental work. Their answer? Start chewing <a href="http://www.prevention.com/food/healthiest-chewing-gums" target="_blank">sugar-free gum</a>.It’s the next best thing to brushing every time you eat.<br />
In fact, a recent UK study about tooth decay found that the National
Health Service, England’s public health system, could save more than 8
million pounds—the cost of more than 360,000 dental checkups—a year if
every 12-year-old starting chewing gum after eating.<br />
<b><br /></b>
While the study was backed by the Wrigley Company, which sells gum, there’s still definitely something to it.<br />
“Anything we can do to reduce the amount of acid and bacteria in your
mouth will help prevent tooth decay,” says Matthew Messina, D.D.S., a
spokesperson for the American Dental Association. “And that means less
dental work over time.”<br />
Eating or drinking anything (other than water, of course) leaves residue that feeds bacteria.<br />
As bacteria eat the sugars that hang out in your mouth, they produce acids that then wear away your enamel.<br />
<div id="zeus_inhouse_ad_container">
<div class="block block-dfp first odd" id="block-dfp-in-content-article-520x150">

Chewing gum not only loosens the bits of food that get stuck in your
teeth, it also starts up your saliva glands and floods your mouth. The
saliva washes over your teeth, picking up bacteria and acid as it goes,
which you then swallow.<br />
<b><br /></b>
And there you go—you have less enamel-eating acid in your mouth.<br />
For best results, Dr. Messina says, chew gum for at least 20 minutes after eating.<br />
And make sure it’s sugar-free. Chewing gum that contains natural sugars will only fuel the bacteria.<br />
